  4. The Mormons modernize a supersecret ceremony

  7.     Jews have bar mitzvah, Catholics have confirmation, and
  8. Mormons have . . . endowment. Never heard of it? Not
  9. surprising, since this coming-of-age rite for all regular
  10. church members occurs only in temples that are strictly off
  11. limits to nonbelievers, and initiates vow to die rather than
  12. reveal details of the ceremony. Despite the secrecy shroud,
  13. news has leaked that Mormon officials last month instituted the
  14. most sweeping ritual changes in a century.

  16.     Among other things, the church deleted the pledge of wifely
  17. obedience demanded of women, who typically undergo endowment
  18. prior to temple marriage. Now women merely join the men in
  19. pledging obedience to God. Another key change occurs in a
  20. dramatic representation showing a polytheistic Elohim
  21. dispatching Jehovah and Michael to create the world. The scene
  22. in which Satan pays a Protestant preacher to lure Mormons from
  23. their faith is out, perhaps because it offended converts from
  24. Protestantism. (The Latter-Day Saints still hold theirs to be
  25. the only authentic form of Christianity.)

  27.     The endowment has been altered over the decades, most
  28. notably by eliminating the oath to avenge church prophets and
  29. blood-curdling secrecy vows ("We agree that our throats be cut
  30. from ear to ear"). Ritual secrets are believed to let a Mormon
  31. pass into the highest levels of heaven. After performing the
  32. rite for themselves, Mormons may repeat it over and over for
  33. the vicarious benefit of dead relatives. But by some accounts,
  34. the number performing such "temple work" has been falling off.
  35. A briefer, modernized ritual could help reverse that trend.
  36. Says Mormon author Allen Roberts: "The ceremony is less harsh,
  37. less threatening, less offensive."
